Death, although it brings a fighter’s life to an end, cannot bring to an end the struggle in which he consciously took his place. What does not disappear with the death of a communist is the struggle that he regarded as part of the historic battle of the working class for emancipation from capitalism; the positions he defended, the horizon for which he fought, and the tasks that remain for succeeding generations to take up.

Some time ago, the International Communist Current (ICC) informed Internationalist Voice that Comrade Luciano was no longer among us. His sudden death is undoubtedly a loss for the Communist Left and for the comrades who worked alongside him on this political path. Until the final days of his life, he remained part of the historic movement of the proletariat for emancipation from capitalist society and for the establishment of a society free from exploitation, the state, national borders and class domination.

Comrade Luciano was a comrade well known to us and played an active role in the meetings between Internationalist Voice and the ICC. In particular, he actively participated in the preparation of the joint statement on the war in Ukraine, as well as in the drafting of the bulletins concerning the war.

At one of the subsequent meetings, following the fall of the Assad regime, the International Communist Current’s article on Syria, and its use of the concept of “civil war” in relation to the situation there, was discussed and criticised. Internationalist Voice emphasised that the International Communist Current could not speak of a “civil war” in Syria while at the same time characterising the events in Spain as an imperialist war. In order to advance such a definition, it would first have to reassess its previous position.

Comrade Luciano immediately accepted the validity of this criticism concerning the formulation of the point and stated that Internationalist Voice was right. The delegation of the ICC subsequently stated that it would reconsider the matter. The article in question was later amended, and the article itself noted this change in formulation.[1]

Communist left has never built its history on the shoulders of individuals. Its strength lies not in hero-worship or the cult of personality, but in the continuity of a historical tradition, in the relentless critique of capitalism, and in the consistent and unwavering defence of proletarian internationalism. For this reason, the loss of any comrade, however painful and profound, must not become the end of the struggle to which we are committed. On the contrary, the memory of a comrade remains alive when we continue the struggle to which they had committed themselves.

For this reason, our deepest sympathy and solidarity with Comrade Luciano’s family and with his comrades in the ICC are expressed through continuing the very struggle that he consciously chose, in the tradition of the Communist Left.

The best way to honour an internationalist is to stand by the same principles and the same political horizon to which he devoted his life. Today, in the face of the loss of this comrade, our task is not simply to remember him; our task is to continue along the path he consciously chose. The struggle to which he devoted himself did not end with his death. That struggle continues, and the responsibility for carrying it forward rests with us all.

We do not keep his memory alive through mourning or individual praise; we keep it alive by continuing the struggle to which he consciously committed himself. As long as the working class’s struggle for emancipation from exploitation, capitalism, the state and national borders continues, his memory and his contribution will remain alive within that struggle.

Comrade Luciano is no longer among us, but the path he chose ‒ with hope, determination and a belief in the ability of the working class to change the world ‒ remains before us: a future free from exploitation and the brutality of capital, a future that can emerge only from the conscious, organised and internationalist struggle of the working class.
