There Can Be No Struggle Against Imperialist War Without the Positions of the Communist Left
Imperialist wars have plunged large parts of the world into a vortex of barbarism and destruction, and this process continues to expand. From the war in Ukraine and the massacres in Gaza following the ceasefire, to military tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, the conflict between India and Pakistan, clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the wars in Myanmar, Syria, Sudan and Nigeria, as well as military tensions in Venezuela, and now a full-scale war in the Middle East involving or affecting around fifteen countries, no region has remained untouched by the devastating effects of these wars.
These wars are not merely military events; rather, they represent a clear manifestation of the deep contradictions of capitalism in its epoch of decline and reflect the very mode of life and social relations of capitalism in the present era.
Imperialist tensions and destructive wars can only be answered through proletarian internationalism. This internationalism is neither a propaganda slogan nor an abstract concept; rather, it consists in the struggle against all imperialist camps, the continuous pursuit of the class struggle on a global scale on the basis of the interests of the working class, and the organised effort to realise the perspective of the communist revolution — a revolution that constitutes the only way to bring imperialist wars to an end once and for all.
If, during the First World War, internationalism found its meaning through the struggle of the Left against the Social Democrats’ betrayal of proletarian positions, this struggle continued in the 1930s, but this time it took the form of resistance to the degeneration of the Comintern. The Spanish Civil War was a test for the Communist Left, enabling it to understand that the war between the republican and fascist factions of the bourgeoisie formed part of the conflict between imperialist powers, and that only fidelity to proletarian aims could indicate the correct path.
During the Second World War as well, it was only the current of the Communist Left that held firmly to internationalist principles, remained faithful to them, and defended them.
In the following decades, during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and dozens of other conflicts imposed on humanity by the barbaric capitalist system, the Communist Left consistently maintained its fidelity to internationalist principles. In the wake of the Russia–Ukraine war (NATO), the Communist Left—referring to the Zimmerwald Conference, particularly its Left wing under Lenin’s leadership—issued a joint statement, emphasising that imperialist war is an inseparable part of the capitalist mode of life in its period of decline, and that, in the age of imperialism, there can be no escape from war.
This internationalist tradition continues to endure. In the Middle East conflict as well, the Communist Left has remained faithful to the tradition of proletarian internationalism and has emphasised the class struggle of workers as the only real path for confronting imperialist wars. It is a tradition that not only refrains from holding the blood of workers in its hands, but has consistently defended class independence and the principles of internationalism, serving as a symbol of resistance to war and the decay of capitalism.
The struggle against imperialist war is entirely a class struggle. The working class, as a global class, has no homeland, and its interests do not align with those of the bourgeoisie. Contrary to the illusions of bourgeois pacifism, the Communist Left has emphasised that only the global working class—and only through independent class struggle—is capable of confronting imperialist war. This is a struggle that must be rooted in class organisation, proletarian consciousness, and international solidarity, not in reliance on bourgeois powers or so-called peacekeeping states.
As long as the ruling class does not properly perceive the threat of working-class uprisings, it will continue its relentless slaughter and barbarism. For this reason, proletarian consciousness and organised resistance are not only tools for defending the lives of workers, but also conditions for achieving real and lasting peace.
Every effort to clarify the path of the class struggle is a step towards confronting the destructive logic of capitalism and demonstrating the historical role of the global working class in building a world free from war and capitalist exploitation. Study, debate, and even critique the statements, articles, and positions of the Communist Left, and republish them as well; for the dissemination of these analyses and perspectives is an inseparable part of the struggle against imperialist wars and the defence of the working class’s independence.
Down with the imperialist war!
Long live the Communist Left!
Long live the war between the classes!
